What's the difference between osteopaths, chiropractors and physiotherapists?

A common question that has no easy answer because of considerable differences both between disciplines and between individual professionals within each discipline. It is best to reiterate that osteopaths have been trained to examine the body as a whole, that the defining principles are that structure governs function and that a balanced body is able to heal itself.

Seek the advice of trusted friends and make inquiries of professionals that may be right for you.

Is osteopathic treatment safe?

Osteopaths are trained to recognise  conditions that might make Osteopathic treatment unsafe. If relevant an osteopath will refer patients for medical attention as required.

Do I need a referral to see an osteopath?

If you wish to see an osteopath privately there is no referral required. The only situation requiring a referral is if the payer is Veteran Affairs. Please call your osteopath to see if they have the necessary registrations for Veterans Affairs. A patient can have a referral for Enhanced Primary Care written by their general practitioner for osteopathic care of certain chronic conditions.

Who pays? Am I covered?

Most individuals pay directly. If you have a medical insurance with ancillary cover (extra’s) then some rebate may apply. Workcover, Veterans Affairs and the Transport Accident Commission recognize the services of osteopaths and will pay for valid claims. Some chronic conditions are paid for by medicare under the Enhanced Primary Care plan. Talk to your general practitioner about referral for under this system.
